For me a primary reason to read the Bible is the events that took place around the life of a single person that lived thousands of years ago. Events that from our point in history seem to have impacted the world to this day. And it turns out we have an orderly account written by a single author to help us understand the events and characters of the time. So we have a starting place for our study the Gospel of Luke and The Acts of the Apostles.

An Orderly Sequence

The first few lines of Luke & Acts show clearly these writings work together to tell a story of the events that took place around Jesus of Nazareth and the time after his crucifixion.

Since many have attempted to compile an account concerning the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning passed on to us, it seemed best to me also—because I have followed all things carefully from the beginning—to write them down in orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty concerning the things about which you were taught.

Luke 1:1-4 LEB

I produced the former account, O Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and to teach, until the day he was taken up, after he had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen, to whom he also presented himself alive after he suffered, with many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking the things about the kingdom of God. And while he was with them, he commanded them, “Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for what was promised by the Father, which you heard about from me. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 1:1-5 LEB

Curious they aren't together in our Bibles but rather separated by the Gospel according to John. I don't know that story yet. But we will read them together to begin our journey by understanding more about Jesus and the impact he had in his life and death.

Week 1 Plan:

  • Spend this coming week reading the full writings in the books of Luke and Acts (52 chapters in 7 days).
  • Remember to listening to the audio while reading will help you pace your reading. You don't have to study every verse but keep an eye out for familiar or repetitive words and ideas. Underline or highlight as you read.
